Breakfast Fuels McKayla’s Passion

McKayla’s morning routine starts around 8 a.m. She stretches, then heads to the breakfast table to spend time with her brother and sister while enjoying some fruit and a hard-boiled egg. From there she heads to the gym where she trains for four to five hours. Afternoon is spent on schoolwork, and then it’s back to the gym to finish her training, with her day usually ending by 8 p.m.

For McKayla, Great Starts Come Naturally

“I was technically in gymnastics from the age of 2 and always felt comfortable in the gym. I’m addicted to mastering new challenges and learning new skills. Every day you’re learning something new, and I love the feeling of accomplishment you get from this process. I’ve learned to never give up, even with setbacks, and I always believe in fighting for something you feel is necessary in your life. For me, that’s gymnastics.” — McKayla Maroney

Her Great Things

Gymnastics just came naturally to McKayla. As a young girl, she spent her days bouncing and bounding around her house to the point where her mother realized that she needed to harness all of McKayla’s energy, with gymnastics being an obvious solution. After training several years near her home in Long Beach, McKayla knew that she wanted to go to the Olympics. And the best way to pursue that dream was to change gymnastics clubs — first to Gym-Max Academy of Gymnastics in Costa Mesa and then to All Olympia Gymnastics Center in Los Angeles, where she now trains with Arthur Akopyan and Galina Marinova. The moves paid off for McKayla, and she soon found herself competing against some of the best gymnasts in the world. Her first international success as a senior gymnast came in March 2011 at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy, where she won the all-around competition. Later that year at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, McKayla was instrumental in helping the American team finish first with her strong showing on the vault. 2012 brought continued success for McKayla, including first-place finishes on the vault at the Secret U.S. Classic in Chicago, Ill., and again at the Olympic trials in San Jose, Calif., which earned her a position on the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics team, fulfilling her lifelong dream.

Away From the Gym

When not performing a round-off, half-on, full-twisting front layout in international competitions, McKayla is pretty much your typical high school sophomore. Being a California native, she likes spending time at the beach or at the pool with friends, listening to music, eating sushi, reading, taking in a movie or simply hanging out with her parents and her two siblings.
