Michael Starts with Frosted Mini-Wheats®

Take it from Michael: “You can’t reach the highest level without putting in as many hours off the table as you do on it, maybe more.” That’s why his weeks typically include five days of table tennis practice and five to six days of physical training.  The long practice sessions and stamina required in table tennis mean Michael tries to eat as healthfully as possible. He avoids excessive sweets and eats fruit as well as protein before and after his workouts. Michael frequently starts his training days with Frosted Mini-Wheats®  cereal — his favorite Kellogg’s® cereal.

For Michael, Great Starts Lead to Great Things

“We had a table in the basement and my dad and I would play every single night, beginning when I was two. I took a lesson and … pretty soon I gave up everything else and started focusing on that because I loved it so much.” — Michael Landers

Where He Lives Now

His Great Things

Now eyeing his first Olympic Games, Michael joined the U.S. national team in 2007 when he was 13. Two years later he became the youngest U.S. men’s national champion ever.

Michael, a native of Long Island, N.Y., committed himself to the sport of table tennis at age 9 after suffering a broken arm that prevented him from playing most other sports. From there, he developed a passion for it and currently trains at a table tennis club in Manhattan. When he isn’t traveling the Long Island Rail Road to practice, he studies online to complete his high school work and travels to China to train with the world’s best players.

Serving Up Something Great

  • Became the youngest U.S. Men's Singles Champion at age 15
  • First place at the 2010 U.S. National Junior Singles event
  • 2010 Youth Olympic Games —  Boys PanAm Qualifier
  • 2009 U.S. National Championships —  Men's Singles Champion
  • 2009 World Junior Circuit Canada —  Cadet Teams First Place
  • 2009 North American Championships —  Cadet Boys Champion

Away From the Table

  • Michael’s other passion is music. Blessed with the gift of perfect pitch, he studied the bassoon and was the only freshman in high school to make the New York State Honor Band. Now, when he needs a break from schoolwork or training, he sits at his keyboard or piano and plays virtually anything he has ever heard. This helps him prepare for his next challenge.
  • Besides table tennis, Michael’s favorite sport is hockey. He’s a New York Islanders fan.
