Each of us has trillions of active, mostly friendly, microorganisms – the gut microbiome – in our bodies. These good bacteria help balance the bad bacteria in the gut and help support digestive wellness. Eating a diverse range of plant-based foods that deliver fiber from a variety of grains can help support a healthy microbiome.
That’s where Kellogg comes in. More than 100 years ago, W.K. Kellogg founded our company motivated by his belief in nutrition and dedication to wellbeing. He created the world’s first toasted cereal flake, based on his understanding of the nutrition benefits of eating fiber-rich grains. More than a century later, Mr. Kellogg’s legacy continues to inspire us as we fulfill our commitment to nourish 1 billion people with our foods. This commitment is part of our Kellogg’s® Better Days global purpose platform through which we’re creating Better Days for 3 billion people by the end of 2030.
“Good nutrition and simple grains have been at the heart of Kellogg Company since its inception,” said Nigel Hughes, DPhil., senior vice president, global research and development. “Innovations in digestive wellness are woven throughout the story of our food from the very beginning when we introduced Bran Flakes®, the world’s first high-fiber cereal, in 1915 and Kellogg’s All-Bran® one year later.”
The gut microbiome is an important driver of digestive wellness, and plant fibers, including grain fibers, are their primary source of nourishment1. Fiber intake remains woefully low across the globe, however a bowl of high fiber cereal can easily provide a significant amount of fiber to fuel the gut microbiome.
That’s why Kellogg continues to introduce new plant-based foods and offer longtime favorite cereals that as part of diet rich in grain fiber can foster a diverse microbiome and help support digestive health:
We introduced several new foods in 2019, including Kellogg’s Nutri Digest® in Latin America and Kellogg’s All-Bran Prebiotic® Oaty Clusters in the U.K in 2020.
Kellogg’s Frosted Mini-Wheats® and Kellogg’s Raisin Bran® cereals are great ways to increase fiber intake. And Kellogg’s Bran Flakes and Kellogg’s® All-Bran® remain lynchpins in our offerings of fiber-rich foods that help support gut health.
Challenges remain in helping people achieve adequate dietary fiber intakes to support overall wellness. That’s why Kellogg is committed to creating foods that include fiber and to collaborating with academia, industry, regulators and local communities to continue work toward a shared goal of improved nutrition and health for all.
