What Is Kellogg’s Mybowl™?

Kellogg’s MyBowl™ shows how easy it is to meet dietary recommendations while building a nutritious cereal breakfast of grains, dairy and fruit. It extends the messages of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate by illustrating that all food groups can fit into all meals, even those traditionally served in bowls.*

Healthcare professionals can use MyBowl and the tools and resources that help support it to educate people on how to make the most of their breakfast meal.

KELLOGG’S MYBOWL — AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL

Kellogg’s MyBowl™ is a simple tool that helps people understand how specific foods fit into “food groups,” specifically, how cereal, milk and fruit deliver servings and nutrients from the grains, dairy and fruit food groups.

The positioning and size of the colored bands around MyBowl reflect the different types and amounts of foods and food group combinations that could be enjoyed in a bowl. Orange represents the grains group; blue represents the dairy group; and red represents the fruit group.

THE BENEFITS OF CEREAL AND MILK

There is a lot of information out there about what nutrients are most important at breakfast, but to help start the day right, a bowl of cereal and 1/2 cup of skim milk**** gives your body protein and grains it needs to help refuel the body.

  • Carbs from grains help to efficiently recharge after the overnight fast and protein helps rebuild losses from daily protein breakdown.
  • Cereal and milk is a leading source of 10 nutrients in people’s diets, making it a nutritious choice for the number of calories it provides.8
  • A serving of Kellogg’s cereal and 1/2 cup of skim milk can provide nutrients many people may not get enough of, including fiber, calcium, Vitamin D and potassium.

One serving of Kellogg's cereal and 1/2 cup of skim milk is a powerful combination of protein and grains that helps refuel your body. Protein helps you rebuild, grains help you recharge. Together, grains and protein help you fuel right.

There is also a great opportunity to add more vitamins, minerals and fiber by adding fruit as a topping.

HELP PEOPLE GET THE MOST NUTRITION

People need help starting the day with a balanced breakfast; research shows:

  • While more than half (54%) of all adults would like to eat breakfast every day, only one-third (34%) actually do.2
  • Nearly all moms (89%) want their kids to eat breakfast every day; however, 40% of moms report their child doesn’t eat breakfast daily.2
  • While nearly all toddlers and preschool-age children are eating breakfast, consumption of breakfast dips as American children grow older; 77% of young children eat breakfast every day, but the number falls to 50% in the middle-school years and 36% among high school students.2

HELP PEOPLE START THE DAY RIGHT

Kellogg’s MyBowl™ plays an important role in helping people get off to a great start by showing them how easy it is to build a nutritious breakfast.

People need help starting the day with a balanced breakfast: Research shows that when people do eat breakfast, top items consumed included non-food choices, such as coffee and tea.

Kellogg’s MyBowl™ helps people realize that eating breakfast can be a fast and easy solution to achieving a varied diet and meeting nutrient needs.

HELP AMERICANS GET MORE FIBER

A cereal breakfast can help Americans get more fiber, which was noted in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans as a “nutrient of concern,” since 9 out of 10** Americans don’t meet daily recommendations for fiber.4

In fact, on average, Americans consume just about half (14-18 g) of the 25-38 g of fiber they need each day.5

  • Breakfast presents an excellent opportunity for increasing fiber intake, since Americans only get 18% of their daily fiber at breakfast.6
  • A cereal breakfast, in particular, can boost fiber intake. Adults who eat cereals made with whole grains with at least 3 grams of fiber per serving get 42% more fiber at breakfast and 14% more throughout the day than adults who eat whole-grain cereals with less fiber.7
  • Use Kellogg’s MyBowl as a guide to help educate how cereal grains and fruit can help provide the fiber consumers need.

*Kellogg developed MyBowl to complement USDA’s MyPlate; it is not affiliated with nor endorsed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

**Actual percentage of people not getting enough fiber is 95%.
